Bio

John Dip Silas is an internationally acclaimed jazz pianist residing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

John trained in classical music from the age of 5 and gained experience “performing” in church. At the age of 18, he enrolled at the Australian International Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, where he was exposed to jazz music. He graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor in Performing Arts (BMus) and has since been an active member of the Malaysian jazz scene. He currently teaches at the jazz faculty of University of Malaya, alongside performing at top jazz venues such as No Black Tie, Alexis Bistro, and Bobo KL.

John has performed at an array of jazz venues around Australia, Singapore, China and Malaysia. He has worked with a number of internationally acclaimed and accomplished musicians such as Tony Lakatos (Germany), Shunzo Ohno (Japan), Michael Simon (Venezuela), Diego Maroto (Mexico), Rodrigo Villanueva (Mexico), Maciej Fortuna (Poland), Chika Asamoto (Japan), James Flynn (Australia), Phil Scorgie (New Zealand), Amelia Ong (Indonesia), John Thomas (Malaysia), Marques Young (USA), Scott Murphy (Scottland), Ashton Moore (USA), Juwita Suwito (Malaysia) and many more.

John performs as a solo artist, sessionist and with NewSound, a band he established in 2016. His first EP, Eager Expectation, was released in 2016. Other bands that John regularly performs with are the Lawrence Wright Jazz Ensemble and the John Thomas Quartet.

His passion is to mentor and guide young and upcoming musicians to find their place in the field. He is currently on the organising committees of the Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival and Malaysian Jazz Piano Competition that provides young musicians with an opportunity to be exposed, discovered and to find their own unique sound.
